Perceptions 2007: An International Survey of Library Automation
Readers might recall the post that appeared here last August announcing a survey that I was conducting on library automation products, companies, and on attitudes toward open source ILS alternatives. I’ve closed the survey have analyzed the results, and have written a brief article summarizing the findings.

I’ve also created an interactive tool for viewing the statistical summaries and comments. The main tables in the article show statistics only for those products that had more than 30 survey responses. You can use the ILS Product Report to view the statistics on any of the products mentioned in the survey and to read the comments about that system. The comments that display have been edited to remove any text that identifies the individual or institution, preserving the anonymity of the responders. A minority of the comments reflect satisfaction with the products and companies, but most reveal a high degree of frustration, concern, and dissatisfaction.

Reactions and comments on Perceptions 2007
I’ve been delighted at the amount of attention that my recent Perceptions 2007: An international survey on Library Automation has received. While at the recent ALA Midwinter Meeting in Philadelphia lots of folks mentioned to me that they had read the report and appreciated its results.
Richard Wallis of Talis interviewed me last week about the report, which is now available as a podcast on the Talis panlibus site. In the interview I talked about the reasons why I thought such a report was needed, the methodology used to conduct the survey, and my impressions of the results.
The report has been covered in many blogs, including: Steven Arnold in Beyond Search, Roy Tennant on his Library Journal blog, Library Support Staff, Lorcan Dempsey's weblog, Michael Casey's LibraryCrunch, Edward Corrado, Bill Drew on Baby Boomer Librarian, and by Eric Schnell in The Medium is the Message. Prior to the podcast, Richard Wallis also blogged about the article on the Talis panlibus blog.
The folks at Polaris were, of course, delighted about the study, even offering print outs of the report at their booth at the ALA Midwinter Meeting in Philadelphia.
